the ladins

The group of native ladin speaking people is with 30.000 members beside faroic and samic one of the rarest spoken languages in Europe.

This romanic language is spoken in the "Gader-Valley" (Val Badia) where the Schuen Family lives. It is also spoken in 4 other "mountain" regions of northern Italy, every one with it´s own idiom.

While in Val di Fassa (Trentino), Val Gardena and Val Badia (South Tyrol) ladin became an official language, the Ladins in Fodom and Cortina d´Ampezzo are not officialy recognized as a minority.

The ladinian landscape is dominated by the dolomite Mountains and has heavily influenced on local myths and folk-music (e.g. Epos of the Kingdom Fanes).
